Space Sweeper紹介#2: 八木 メグ（2024年新卒入社）

スペースデブリ（宇宙ゴミ）除去や宇宙の軌道上サービスに取り組んでいるアストロスケールでは社員をSpace Sweeper（宇宙の掃除屋さん）と呼んでいます。計6回に渡り、私たちがどのような仕事をしているのか、ミッションを実現するためにどのような挑戦をし続けているのかを紹介させて頂いています✨

今回は、ニュージーランド出身、2024年新卒入社のエンジニア、八木メグさんにインタビューさせてもらいました🎤

1. 簡単に⾃⼰紹介をお願いします。お名前と役職は何ですか？

My name is Meg Yagi. Originally from New Zealand, I recently relocated to Japan to join Astroscale. I’m currently an Associate Computer Vision Engineer in the Software Team at Astroscale Japan.

八木メグです。ニュージーランド出身で、アストロスケールに入社するために最近日本に移住しました。現在はAstroscale JapanのSoftwareチームでAssociate Computer Vision Engineerをしています。

2. 業務内容は具体的にどんなものですか？

Fiducial markers in computer vision are distinctive, predefined patterns that serve as reference points to aid in accurate recognition and tracking. I am currently focused on designing and developing these markers and detection algorithms for a range of applications, including robot arm calibration and pose estimation. My work aims to enhance precision in determining the position and orientation of client objects in space, improving the performance and reliability of our systems.

私は現在、ロボットアームのキャリブレーションや姿勢推定など、さまざまな用途のマーカーと検出アルゴリズムの設計・開発に注力しています。コンピュータビジョンにおけるフィデューシャルマーカーとは、正確な認識と追跡をサポートするための参照点として機能する、あらかじめ定義されたパターンのことです。私の研究は、クライアントの位置と向きを決定する精度を高め、システムの性能と信頼性を向上させることを目的としています。

3. 普段の一日の様子を教えてもらえますか？

I usually begin my mornings with exercise—either hitting the gym or going for a run. After that, I head to the office, where in-person collaboration and support are especially valuable for me as a recent graduate. Being on-site also allows me to engage with my colleagues on a range of topics, which helps deepen my understanding of our company and the space industry.

Throughout the day, I organize my tasks with guidance from my manager and work on a variety of computer vision projects, along with occasional corporate projects (like this one!). I also take part in team meetings to discuss progress and strategies. I particularly value our informal meetings, which focus on casual information sharing. These sessions not only keep everyone updated but also foster a collaborative environment where ideas and insights can flow freely.

朝はたいていジムかランニングで体を動かします。その後、オフィスに向かいます。新卒の私にとって、直接会っての協力やサポートは特に貴重です。また、オフィスにいることで、さまざまなトピックについて同僚と関わることができ、会社や宇宙産業についての理解を深めるのに役立っています。

上司の指導を受けながら自分のタスクを整理し、さまざまなコンピューター・ビジョンのプロジェクトや、今回のような会社のプロジェクトに取り組みます。また、進捗状況や戦略について話し合うチームミーティングにも参加しています。特に、カジュアルな情報共有に重点を置いた非公式ミーティングを大切にしています。このような会議があることによって、全員が最新情報を得られるだけでなく、アイデアや洞察が自由に行き交う共同作業環境も育まれていると思います。

4. なぜ宇宙業界で働こうと思ったのですか？

I’ve always been captivated by the mysteries of space and the potential for discovery. Working in the space industry allows me to be at the forefront of exploration and innovation, contributing to humanity’s progress. The advancements in this field have profound implications for technology, science, and our everyday lives, and being part of this journey to enhance human knowledge and capability is incredibly fulfilling.

During my time as a mechatronics engineering student, I was actively involved in rocketry and space clubs, which further fueled my interest in the field. However, I also encountered the space industry's "do anything to get there" mentality, which conflicted with my sustainability values. When I discovered Astroscale, a company dedicated to sustainable space, it felt like the perfect fit. Their commitment to addressing space debris and promoting sustainability resonated deeply with me, making it an obvious choice to pursue a career here.

私はいつも宇宙の神秘と発見の可能性に魅了されてきました。宇宙産業で働くことで、探求と革新の最前線に立ち、人類の進歩に貢献することができます。この分野での進歩は、技術、科学、そして私たちの日常生活に多大な影響を及ぼすものであり、人類の知識と能力を向上させるこの旅の一部となることは、信じられないほど充実したものです。

メカトロニクス工学を専攻していた学生時代、私はロケットクラブや宇宙クラブに積極的に参加し、この分野への関心をさらに高めました。しかし、宇宙産業の「そこに到達するためなら何でもする」という考え方も目にし、それは私の持続可能性の価値観とは相反するものでした。そんなとき、持続可能な宇宙開発に取り組むアストロスケールを見つけ、これだ！と思いました。スペースデブリに対処し、持続可能性を推進する彼らの取り組みは、私の心に深く響きました。

5. あなたの仕事の内、最もやりがいのある要素はなんですか？

The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that my work directly contributes to the advancement of space technology and the sustainable use of space. Being part of a team that tackles complex challenges and develops innovative solutions is incredibly fulfilling. I find great satisfaction in seeing our projects make a tangible impact, whether it’s through improving technology, advancing scientific knowledge, or supporting sustainable practices in space.

Additionally, the collaborative environment allows me to learn from and work alongside talented professionals, which enhances my growth and development. Witnessing our collective efforts come to fruition and contribute to the broader goals of space exploration and sustainability is truly gratifying.

私の仕事で最もやりがいを感じるのは、自分の仕事が宇宙技術の進歩や宇宙の持続可能な利用に直接貢献していることを実感できることです。複雑な課題に取り組み、革新的な解決策を開発するチームの一員であることは、非常に充実感があります。私たちのプロジェクトが、技術の向上、科学知識の進歩、宇宙での持続可能な活動の支援など、具体的なインパクトをもたらすのを目の当たりにすると、大きなやりがいを感じます。

また、助け合いながら働くという環境にいるおかげで、才能あるプロフェッショナルから学び、共に働くことができ、自分を成長させてくれます。私たちの努力の積み重ねが実を結び、宇宙探査と持続可能性という大きな目標に貢献する姿を目の当たりにすることは、本当に喜ばしいことです。

6. アストロスケール で働いてみて実際にどんな感じですか？

What really makes working at Astroscale special for me is the people. The supportive and collaborative environment is a significant part of what makes the workplace enjoyable and productive.

There are many opportunities to connect with colleagues outside of work. Personally, I am involved in the AstroClimbers and AstroRunners clubs, where I’ve enjoyed bouldering, mountain hiking, and running with my coworkers.The workplace itself is highly collaborative, with a strong emphasis on teamwork. Regular meetings, brainstorming sessions, and cross-departmental interactions ensure that everyone is aligned and working towards common goals. Although being a growing company can sometimes present communication challenges across diverse backgrounds, the open communication and supportive atmosphere make it easy to share ideas and learn from one another.Additionally, with a global presence and a diverse workforce, working at Astroscale means engaging with an international team. This exposure to different perspectives and expertise enriches my experience and fosters a broader understanding of global space issues.

アストロスケールで働くことは私にとって特別なことです。協力的な環境は、職場を楽しく生産的なものにしている重要な要素です。仕事以外でも同僚とつながる機会がたくさんあります。個人的には、AstroClimbersとAstroRunnersというクラブに所属し、同僚とボルダリングや山歩き、ランニングを楽しんでいます。

職場はチームワークを重視し、非常に協力的です。定期的なミーティング、ブレーンストーミング・セッション、部門を超えた交流により、全員が足並みを揃え、共通の目標に向かって取り組んでいます。成長企業であるため、多様な背景を持つ人たちとのコミュニケーションに苦労することもありますが、オープンなコミュニケーションと協力的な雰囲気のおかげで、アイデアを共有し、互いに学び合うことが容易です。

また、アストロスケールはグローバルに事業を展開し、多様な社員が働いているため、国際色豊かなチームと働くことができます。異なる視点や専門知識に触れることは、私の経験を豊かにし、世界の宇宙問題に対する幅広い理解を育みます。

7. 宇宙産業について１つ変えられるとしたら、それは何でしょうか？

If I could change one thing about the space industry, it would be to shift towards a vision where space exploration is primarily for the benefit of all humanity.

In an ideal world, space exploration would be driven by a collective desire to advance knowledge, address global challenges, and improve life on Earth. By fostering international collaboration and ensuring that space activities are guided by principles of peace and shared progress, we can better harness the potential of space to benefit all of humankind. This approach would emphasize space's role as a global common, dedicated to scientific discovery, technological innovation, and the betterment of society.[AH3] 

もし私が宇宙産業について何か1つ変えられるとしたら、その焦点を人類の利益のために行われるというビジョンへとシフトさせます。

理想的な世界では、宇宙探査は、知識を発展させ、地球規模の課題に取り組み、地球上の生活を向上させたいという集団的な願望によって推進されます。国際的な協力を促進し、宇宙活動が平和と進歩の共有という原則によって導かれるようにすることで、私たちは宇宙の潜在能力をよりよく活用し、人類全体に利益をもたらすことができるのです。このようなアプローチは、科学的発見、技術革新、そして社会の向上をもたらし、グローバルな共通項としての宇宙の役割を強調するものだと思います。

8. あなたにとって、宇宙の未来はどのように⾒えますか？

The future of space will likely see a strong focus on sustainability. We will advance technologies to manage space debris effectively, develop reusable spacecraft, and implement practices that minimize our environmental impact. This will ensure that space remains a viable and accessible domain for future generations.

The role of commercial and private entities in space will continue to expand. Innovations from private companies will drive down costs, increase accessibility, and enable new opportunities for exploration, research, and tourism. This diversification will accelerate progress and make space more accessible to a broader range of people and organizations.

We can expect significant technological advancements that will revolutionize space travel, communication, and exploration. Innovations such as advanced propulsion systems, artificial intelligence, and new materials will enhance our capabilities and open new possibilities for discovery and innovation.

将来の宇宙では、持続可能性が重視されるようになると思います。私たちは、スペースデブリを効果的に管理する技術を進歩させ、再利用可能な宇宙機を開発し、環境への影響を最小限に抑える取り組みを実施します。そうすることで、宇宙が将来の世代にとって実行可能でアクセスしやすい領域であり続けることが保証されます。

また、宇宙における商業・民間企業の役割は拡大し続けると思います。民間企業の技術革新は、コストを引き下げ、アクセス性を向上させ、探査、研究、観光の新たな機会を可能にします。このような多様化は進歩を加速させ、より幅広い人々や組織が宇宙を利用しやすくなると思います。

9. 仕事をしていない時は何をするのが好きですか？

My hobby is challenging myself and trying new things—I’m always up for giving something a go at least once. I love immersing myself in a variety of activities that keep life exciting and fulfilling.Getting outdoors is a significant part of my downtime; I enjoy skiing, surfing, going on road trips, and discovering rivers to swim in.Socializing with friends and building relationships is also important to me, especially through activities like playing board games. For relaxation, I find painting and reading to be great outlets.Current read: "Original Sin: Power, Technology, and War in Outer Space" by Bleddyn Bowen, which I highly recommend.

私の趣味は、新しいことに挑戦することです。人生を刺激的で充実したものにするために、さまざまな活動に没頭するのが好きです。スキーやサーフィン、ドライブ旅行、川での水泳などを楽しんでいます。ボードゲームなどのアクティビティを通じた友人との交流や人間関係の構築も私にとって重要です。リラックスする時には、絵を描いたり、読書をしたりしています。今読んでいる本： Power, Technology, and War in Outer Space（Bleddyn Bowen著）かなりおすすめです。
