「50年続いた映画に見るビジネス名言」

週末にスターウォーズのシリーズ最終作「エピソード９/スカイウォーカーの夜明け」をみた。大きなテレビと音響システムで見たかったのに、GooglePlayに吹き替え版しかなかったので急遽アマプラが再生できる寝室のipadで見ることにした。広大な銀河の物語を12インチモニターで見る情けなさとともに、時代の進化も感じた。

スターウォーズ（以下：SWという）シリーズが最初に産声を上げたのは1977年。もう半世紀前という…衝撃だ。銀河を牛耳る帝国軍と反乱軍、反乱軍に加わる超能力者である「Jedi」たちの戦いを壮大なスケールで描いたSWは単体のストーリーが続いている映画としては累積興行成績1位だ。

50年間続き、累積興行成績1位を取るだけあって映画の内容に引き込まれる要素はたくさんあるんだけれど、せっかくビジネスマンしているのでSWのセリフからビジネスでも「使えるなぁ」と私が感じたものをみなさんに２つ紹介したいと思う。どちらもJediのリーダー「YODA」が語った言葉だ。

Fear is the path to the dark side.（恐れは暗黒面への道である）

Fear leads to anger.（恐れは怒りを生む）

Anger leads to hate.（怒りは憎しみを生む）

Hate leads to suffering.（憎しみは苦しみを生む）

これ、すごく的を得ているなぁって思う。「恐れは憎しみの元」。努力して守るものが増えてきた人間は自分を大切にするあまり周りに恐れを感じるようになる。恐れから生じたストレスはやがて自分の中に怒りを作り出す。やりどころのない怒りを他人に向けるようになる。そこから憎しみが生じ、憎しみが自分の心に大きな苦しみをもたらす。

ね、すごい洞察力だと思いませんか。
あと一つ、Jediはフォースと呼ばれるあらゆる生命を繋ぐエネルギーを大切にします。理屈じゃなくて自分に流れるフォース（自分の直感や、内なる力）を信じろ。というのがSW９作品全てを通じたJediの決まり文句になっています。恐れを遠ざけるための大切な言葉。これがまたかっこいいのよ！

Over the weekend, I watched the final movie in the Star Wars series, "Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker." I wanted to watch it on a big screen with a sound system, but Google Play only had the dubbed version, so I ended up watching it on my iPad in the bedroom using Amazon Prime. It felt a bit disappointing, but at the same time, I realized how much times have changed.

The Star Wars (SW) series made its debut in 1977—nearly half a century ago! It’s incredible to think about. SW, with its epic portrayal of the battle between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, and the superpowered Jedi warriors, remains the highest-grossing film series of all time.

With 50 years of history and such massive box office success, it’s no surprise that the movies are full of captivating elements. Since I’m a businessman, I couldn’t help but find a few lines from SW that can be applied to business. I’d like to share two quotes that resonated with me, both spoken by the Jedi Master Yoda.

"Fear is the path to the dark side."

"Fear leads to anger."

"Anger leads to hate."

"Hate leads to suffering."

This is incredibly insightful. "Fear is the root of hatred." As we accumulate things we want to protect, we start to fear what might happen around us. That fear turns into stress, which creates anger within us. That anger, with nowhere to go, is directed at others, leading to hatred. And that hatred, in turn, brings immense suffering to our hearts.

Isn’t that a profound observation?

One more thing—Jedi warriors value the Force, the energy that connects all living things. Their motto, which runs through all nine SW movies, is to trust the Force (essentially, your intuition), rather than relying solely on logic. And that’s just so cool!
