「AIの課題は環境問題」

私は社内の打ち合わせはなるべく公園でするようにしている。CEOと会議室にこもって話しているとストレスが溜まるだろうと思うし。社外の人ですら公園で歩きながら話をすることもある。ちょっとだけスティーブ・ジョブズになった気分になれるからかなり気に入っている。

昨日、打ち合わせに外に出た瞬間だった。「カッ！」と照りつける太陽。気温を調べたら36℃…ジョブズだったら日傘は必須だろう。汗を大量に吸い込むシャツ、もう頭が朦朧として議題はすでにどうでも良くなっている。アイスコーヒーだけにするか、ガリガリくんも食べるか。そんなことしか考えられない。

気になったから帰ってきて夏の最高気温がどれぐらい上がったのか調べてみた。なんと50年前と比べると３大都市は4℃以上も上がっている。https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/release/201808096829（共同通信調べ）これはもう本当に危険なレベルの環境変化だと思う。ぜひAIを活用してエネルギー利用効率性が高い社会を作って環境を守ってほしい。

でも、そもそもAIを活用するためのデータセンターって強力な冷却装置が必要だから電力を異常に消費するんだよね。生成AIの脳みそ（GPU）は大量に高速計算するから発熱がすごいから。従来の空冷式（エアコン）では冷却はもぅ限界だ、と言われています。

ということで「液冷式（Liquid Cooling）」よばれる液体を利用した冷却装置が業界ですごくホットな話題になっています。なんか男心そそるよなぁ「液冷式」って。「やっぱ空冷式は古いよね、もぅ時代は液冷だよな」とか無駄に言いたくなるかっこよさです。

その液冷式の中でもSFみたいで今、一番かっこいいのが液浸冷却方式です。これ、ガチですごくて電気を通さない液体（フッ素系不活性液体やシリコンオイル）の中にマザーボードやGPUを漬けちゃって直接冷やすから液「浸」冷却と呼ばれています。ピンポイントで熱源を冷やせるから電力使用量が劇的に効率的になる液浸冷却方式システムの登場を心から応援したい。

本当に危険を感じるような最近の気温。AIだけじゃなくて社会全体が創意工夫して電力使用量の削減に取り組んでいかないといけないですね。

I try to have meetings in the park as much as possible. I think staying cooped up in a meeting room with the CEO would be stressful. Sometimes, I even walk and talk with external people in the park. It makes me feel a bit like Steve Jobs, which I quite enjoy.

Yesterday, as soon as I stepped outside for a meeting, the blazing sun hit me. The temperature was 36°C... If Jobs were here, he’d definitely have a parasol. My shirt was soaked with sweat, and my mind was drifting away from the agenda. All I could think about was whether to stick to iced coffee or add a popsicle to the mix.

When I got back, I was curious about how much the average summer temperature had increased. It turns out the temperature in the three major cities has risen by more than 4°C compared to 50 years ago (source: Kyodo News). This level of environmental change is truly dangerous. I hope AI can be used to create a society with high energy efficiency to protect the environment.

However, data centers that support AI require powerful cooling systems and consume an enormous amount of electricity. The brains of generative AI (GPUs) generate a lot of heat due to rapid calculations. Traditional air cooling systems (air conditioning) are said to be at their limit.

This is why liquid cooling systems, which use liquids for cooling, are a hot topic in the industry. It’s something that really excites me. "Air cooling is old-fashioned; we’re now in an era of liquid cooling." I can’t help but think it sounds cool.

Among liquid cooling systems, the coolest and most futuristic is immersion cooling. This involves submerging motherboards and GPUs in non-conductive liquid for direct cooling, hence the name immersion cooling. I fully support the development of these efficient immersion cooling systems, which can dramatically reduce electricity consumption by precisely cooling the heat source.

With the recent alarming temperatures, it’s not just AI; society as a whole needs to innovate and work towards reducing electricity consumption.
