この間、カリフォルニアで走っている自動運転タクシーに乗ってきた。という人の動画を見せてもらった。「ふーん」って平静を装って見てる風を貫いたが、心の中はかなりざわめいていた。「自分の目でみてぇ」「ついでに移民問題も見てぇ」「いや、旅行してえ」頭の中でざわめきは徐々に変わっていった。

カリフォルニアの自動運転タクシーは指定された運行計画地域内であれば運行可能、という俗にレベル４と言われる自動運転車のレギュレーションだ。これに電磁誘導線が道路に組み込まれていてその上を自動で走る。というモノレールと何が違うのかよくわからないのが日本のレベル４自動運転だ。とほほ…。

まぁでもいずれ世界中でレベル４を超えたレベル５の完全自動運転が始まるだろう。国内ではスタートアップ企業「TURING」がテスラ越えに挑戦、来年のレベル５運転を目標に改発しているし2027年には横浜で開催予定の国際演芸博覧会でレベル５の実証実験が計画されている。頑張れ日本企業！

さて、私は自動運転モビリティの開発にはあまり興味がない。車が「青春」だった私の世代は自動運転と言われるとちょっと萎えるのだ。でも自動運転が変える世の中にはすごく興味がある。レベル５が実装されて10年もすればマイカー文化は無くなると思う。所有のメリットが少なくて環境コストが高いから。

ということは、ですよ。「駐車場」がなくなります。自動運転車の「待機場」は必要でもマイカーを止めるスペースはいらなくなります。

…この地面って、日本全国でどれぐらいの大きさあると思います？駐車場がある全ての家で６〜１２畳ほどの地面が空いてくるようなものですよ？巨大な新しい需要が湧き上がるんじゃないでしょうか。レベル５プチ家庭菜園とか。レベル５自動サウナとか。

Recently, I watched a video of someone riding an autonomous taxi in California. I pretended to be calm, but inside, I was excited. “I want to see it with my own eyes,” I thought.

In California, autonomous taxis operate within designated areas, known as Level 4 autonomous driving. This involves electromagnetic induction lines embedded in the road. Meanwhile, Japan’s Level 4 feels more like a monorail. But eventually, Level 5 fully autonomous driving will be commonplace worldwide. In Japan, the startup “TURING” aims to surpass Tesla, with Level 5 operations planned for next year, and a demonstration at the 2027 International Expo in Yokohama. Go Japan!

I’m not particularly interested in developing autonomous vehicles. My generation sees cars as a symbol of youth, so autonomous driving feels less appealing. However, the societal changes brought by autonomous driving fascinate me. In ten years, personal car ownership will likely decline due to its high environmental cost.

This means “parking lots” will disappear. While autonomous vehicle “waiting areas” will still be needed, personal parking spaces will no longer be necessary.

Imagine the amount of land that will be freed up nationwide! Every house with a parking space will have 6-12 tatami mats’ worth of free space. This could create enormous demand for new uses, such as small gardens or automatic saunas.
