If you cross the Hong Kong/China boarder you will notice a peculiar sight. The lines are full of normal people carrying baby milk formula from Hong Kong into China. When I was crossing often, this happened everyday, all day, but only up to two canisters, the limit at the time. Naturally, I wondered what could cause such phenomenon. If you ask your polite Chinese friends they will let you know that this specific brand is popular or trusted. The real reason, the one that could motivate normal people to move with such regularity, is actually fear. It was discovered some time ago that tainted baby milk was being produced and sold. It is likely that executives in these companies knew and did the calculus on how many lives might be affected and how much money might be saved. Being what they are, they naturally picked the later but I suppose that most of the people standing in those same customs lines with their two liters of milked would have made the same decisions if they were in the position as those executives. Although the severity is different, the same calculus which poisons baby milk also makes our cars, chairs, paper boxes, tools. It is not so much these people are evil but the scope of an economy that can only be measured in statistics gives calluses to even the most pure. Something fundamental is broken and half-hearted condemnations and condolences will not turn men into angels. If responsibility comes form accountability and accountability comes from proximity, it seems that by establishing 3D Printing as a viable manufacturing method, we will reconnect the people who make things with the people who use them. I believe if we can remedy this divorce, of which has been the cause of a great malaise in my generation, the strength and appetite that moved the earth, now sapped, will be restored. With this in mind, I would like my companies to elevate the people that work in them and the people that do business with them.
