PES 2017 marked the first inclusion of Konami's partnership with FC Barcelona. Premier League teams Arsenal F.C. and Liverpool were licensed, with Liverpool forming an official partnership with Konami. Notably, PES 2017 excluded some major teams licensed in PES 2016, such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Juventus, and Porto.

Critically acclaimed upon launch, PES 2017 was praised as one of the best Pro Evolution Soccer games to date, seen as a refinement of its predecessor, Pro Evolution Soccer 2016. It was succeeded by Pro Evolution Soccer 2018.
